Chopad is a skill and intelligence based board game. It is believed that Chopad was the game played between the Kauravas and the Pandavas in the epic Mahabharata. The Mughal Emperor Akbar was so fond of this game, that he had converted the ground of his Court in Fatehpur Sikri itself as a huge board for playing Chopad.
This is a Chopad game set covered with Rabari Embroidery. Women belonging to the Rabari community of Kutch, Gujarat have handcrafted this game set using locally available objects and craft items. While the fabric on chopad board has Rabari embroidery, the playing pieces are made with hand crochet over supari or betel nut. Kutch Craft Collective is a collaborative platform of five organizations from Kutch and was formed to revive the old crafts of Kutch, while creating livelihood opportunities for the artisan families. Amongst the five organizations of KCC, Kala Raksha Trust is a social enterprise, dedicated to the preservation of traditional arts. Comprising artisans, community members, and experts in the fields of art, design and museums, Kala Raksha was founded on artisan initiative in 1993.
