Natural cane or rattan is the core of the natural cane palm (or rattan palm) that grows in the North Eastern parts of India. It is an excellent fibre with which to work, as it is both firm and flexible when damp. When dry, it tightens and remains firm yet flexible. Cane may be varnished, painted or simply left in its natural state. Nagaland is particularly well known for its intricate cane weaves and designs that carry the tradition of cane crafts of Nagaland. The baskets of Naga weavers are also known for their finesse and delicacy of work which gives them a lace-like appearance in creating cane baskets and containers.
