Passed down generations, from mothers to daughters, Moonj grass basketry is practiced by the Tharu tribe. They live in the picturesque Terai and Bhabar forested regions of the Kumaon division of Uttarakhand. Moonj is a sustainable, wild grass locally grown along the ponds and water bodies of this region and is harvested during the monsoons. Beautiful baskets are woven with Moonj and are given as gifts to daughters at the time of their marriage, as a part of their trousseau.
