Pattachitra Jagannath Sunavesha Navy blue painting
description
This is a classic Pattachitra of the deities of the famous Jagannath Temple in Odisha. The art of Pattachitra is centuries old and closely associated with the temple. In fact the art form started as a way to worship Lord Jagannath during the time that the main deities were given a ‘break’ for their ritual retreat. In this painting Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra are shown against a Navy blue background. The painting focuses on the Suna Besha, an event where the three deities are adorned with gold jewellery.
This is a work by National Award-winning Pattachitra artist Niranjan Moharana
Literally meaning Cloth Painting, Pattachitra is an art form from Puri in Odisha in which images of deities are painted on a piece of cloth.
