description
This Pattachitra from Odisha portrays the classic image of ‘Kandarpa Hasti’ against a rich maroon coloured background. This painting has a Hasti or elephant having ten gopis or devotees of Lord Krishna under a tree near a lake. They entangle themselves into the form of an elephant. On the elephant’s back, you can see Lord Krishna playing the flute. Floral patterns adorn the borders. This is a masterpiece, made by the National Award winning artist Niranjan Moharana.
Literally meaning Cloth Painting, Pattachitra is an artform from Puri in Odisha in which images of deities are painted on a piece of cloth.
