description
This Pattachitra carries a rare combination of Vaishnava and Shaiva imagery. Around a central figure of Lord Ganesh, the god of auspicious beginnings, you have a series of 40 paintings that tell tales of Shiva, Ganesha’s father as well as Vishnu, who is shown in his different incarnations- the Dashavataras. Lord Ganesha himself is accompanied by his consorts Riddhi and Siddhi perched on his lap.
This painting with images of Shiva is made by the National Award winning artist Niranjan Moharana and is an unusual and unique Pattachitra. The art form normally revolves around the life of Krishna or Vishnu - the primary deity of the Jagannath Temple in Puri
Made up of two words: ‘Patta’ meaning cloth and ‘Chitra’ meaning image, Pattachitra is an art form that emerged from Puri (Odisha) where images of the deities and their chronicles are painted on a piece of cloth.
