The Great Indian Gharanas in Khayal

Khayal, a genre of Hindustani classical music, was popularised by one of the greatest poets and musicians in the subcontinent, Amir Khusro, in the 13th century, but Khayal saw a great revival in the 18th century.

Through this LHI Classic film, we trace the origin of Khayal and take you through the nuances and melodies of its different schools. Taking us on this musical journey are legendary musicians and artistes from four different gharanas. We start with the Gwalior Gharana, which is one of the oldest schools of Khayal singing, and then explore the Agra, Jaipur and Kirana Gharanas.
