Sopara and Mumbai's Ancient Buddhist Past
It’s hard to believe but the bustling Mumbai Metropolitan Region has a vibrant Buddhist past. Did you know that Mumbai's suburb, Nala Sopara was once an ancient urban centre, that grew around the port of Sopara, 2300 years ago? The great Sopara, which is the earliest known urban centre in the region, was a thriving commercial and religious centre. It also tells the story of the region's Buddhist past.
In this film in Lost Cities, we revisit the ancient port of Sopara with archaeologist and historian, Dr Suraj Pandit, who is an authority on the ancient history of North Konkan and has excavated at many sites including Sopara.
