Sarnath, the birthplace of Buddhism, is one of the holiest Buddhist sites in the world and famous as the place where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon. It remained a place of pilgrimage and housed monasteries for monks, scholars and travellers for nearly 1,500 years - from the time of the Buddha to the end of the 12th century CE.
