Made by communities who are following the craft of making handmade toys for generations these ornaments are made of wood and have been hand painted using natural colours.

Each of these pieces is crafted from wood. The makers of these toys use 3 basic colours which are made of natural ingredients. Turmeric for yellow, Kumkuma or red turmeric powder is used for red and Indigo for bluish-black. These are then mixed together to create a few more shades such as orange, green and black. The beautiful shiny finish is obtained by polishing the finished piece with a dry screw pine leaf.

In history the the earliest mention of lacquered wooden toys from the region of Karnataka comes from the 11th-12th century. This art form flourished under Mysore’s Tipu Sultan in the 18th century, when artisans from Persia were invited to share their expertise and train the local craftsmen in the intricate art of crafting wooden toys.
